Hapoel is the name of the sports association in Israel which represented the "workers", and at one time a rival to the other Jewish sports association, Maccabi. Hence many teams in Israel have the prefix of either Hapoel or Maccabi. Sunderland's opponents in this match had been drawn from only the Hapoel teams within Israel.
