Notes
This was Sunderland's first trip away from the North East and proved a bit of a disaster. Great Lever were a prominent North-West team at the time, based in Bolton. No reports got back to the North-East, and the match was conveniently ignored at the end of season AGM. In fact, Sunderland were billed as "Durham" in North-West papers, and Great Lever were chastised by the chairman of the Durham FA by billing the team that way; the chairman was unequivocal in stating that it was Sunderland who travelled and played, assisted by Hope of Whitburn. Bethel Robinson, a Preston North End player, later to play in the Football League with Bolton Wanderers, also assisted Sunderland on the day. Great Lever were obviously a cut above any team Sunderland had previously encountered; Jimmy Trainer and John Goodall later became part of the Preston "invincibles" and played for Wales and England respectively. Innes retired injured early in the second half with the score 0-4.
