There is not a great deal known about this game, but there was great debate afterwards. Bishop Middleham protested on the grounds of rough play by three of the Sunderland players, but this was thrown out by the Challenge Cup Committee and Sunderland progressed. However two of the Sunderland team were censured for their violent and reckless conduct, and the committee were also of the opinion that strong language had been indulged in on both sides. A later review of the season indicated that 3 of Sunderland's goals were own goals!
